Dear friends and Parkdale-High Park neighbours,
I am getting ready for the official opening of the House of Commons on April 3.
At the same time, I am continuing to meet with organizations and individuals to talk in depth about the issues that matter to all of those who live in our community.
On March 7, I held my first community meeting at Swansea Town Hall. Over 50 people attended to share their views and opinions. They wanted to discuss the increasing Canadian military presence in Afghanistan, pensions, public health care, arts and culture, and ethics in government
Child care was raised as well. In fact, across the riding I am hearing from many families on this subject. Many in Parkdale-High Park don’t want the Harper Government to undo the child care aggrements negotiated between the previous minority federal government and the provinces.
I am deeply concerned that the move to undo these agreements will be disastrous for many children and their families, here and across the country. In Toronto alone, we will lose 6,000 new spaces – many slated for low-income, high-need neighbourhoods.
On March 8, I joined other concerned community members at City Hall to sign an open letter to Prime Minister Harper asking him not to cancel the child care agreements. On behalf of all of you who have pleaded with me to protect this fledgling new program, and on behalf of all the children across this country who have so much to lose – I promise to do my best to make your voices heard in Ottawa.
I will be hosting another community meeting, this time in Parkdale, on March 20, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., at the Masaryk Cowan Community Centre, 61 Cowan Ave. I hope you can drop by. Please let me know if you can attend by calling Mike Biliski at 416.769.5072.
Please continue to share your concerns with me. You can visit my website at peggynash.ca and let me know, or send me an email. How do you feel about Afghanistan? What are your views on ethics in government?
I look forward to hearing from you.
