Peggy Nash Enters NDP Leadership Race

This is a critical moment: Nash

TORONTO – MP Peggy Nash (Parkdale-High Park) announced her NDP leadership bid vowing to make jobs and the Canadian economy a focus of her campaign.

“Everyone knows the NDP has its heart in the right place,” Ms. Nash told the crowd. “I can make it clear to Canadians we can manage the economy.”

Jack Layton appointed Ms. Nash Shadow Finance Minister in 2011 and Industry Critic in 2006.

Bringing 25 years of experience “with the CEOs of some of the toughest corporations in Canada and the world,” Ms. Nash offered herself as the complete candidate for a party seeking a mandate to govern in 2015.

Ms. Nash attacked the economic priorities of Prime Minister Harper vowing that her NDP government would “make sure that our economy works to the benefit of all Canadians, not just the few at the top.”

Ms. Nash also discussed how her personal history led to her unifying style of leadership. “I learned how to organize, how to bring people together around the issues that mattered to them and fight for practical policies and solutions.”

Ms. Nash, who is fluent in French, called the NDP leadership race a “critical moment” and a “historic opportunity for progressives from Quebec and Canada, right across this country to harness this great swelling of optimism and energy.”

Ms Nash asked the crowd to work together “to integrate our environmental responsibilities with our economic necessities; to take pride in our country and achieve real fiscal stability that is based on equality.”

“I’ve known Peggy for years — first, as an effective union leader, then as an outstanding parliamentarian. In a field of strong candidates, Peggy stands head and shoulders above her opponents. She’s a brilliant negotiator and knows how to resolve differences. The NDP needs Peggy, the federal parliament needs her leadership, and Canadians need her. Peggy is top quality Prime Ministerial material.”
