It is possible to protect the environment while strengthening the economy: Nash

Toronto / February 15, 2022 – Peggy Nash, MP (Parkdale—High Park) and NDP leadership candidate, released a plan today that links environmental protection to improving the economy.

Since participating in climate change talks in Durban last November/December, Laurin Liu – MP for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles and the NDP’s deputy critic on the environment – is concerned about Canada’s quickly diminishing status as a global leader on climate change:

“To repair the damage to our environment and our international reputation while at the same time strengthening our economy, we need strong leadership and innovative plans,” said Liu. “That’s why I’m with Peggy Nash.”

Said Nash: “My plan proves it’s not only possible to build a strong economy while protecting the environment and supporting all Canadians with smart social policy – it’s essential.”

Liu made public her support for Nash last week.

Nash’s plan to move Canada towards a green economy includes:

  • restoring funding to the ecoENERGY Retrofit program with a renewed focus on incentives for energy efficiency upgrades to low-income housing and new financing options for single-family homes
  • mandating the Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation to support investments in energy efficiency for buildings
  • adopting science-based targets to ensure Canada meets reduces its greenhouse gas emissions to a level 80% below that of 1990 by the year 2050
  • pricing carbon through a cap-and-trade system
  • redirecting revenues raised through the auctioning of emissions permits equitably across Canada into investments in green technologies & initiatives
  • providing direct government incentives for renewable energy technology
  • ending subsidies to the fossil fuel sector and redirecting those funds towards renewable energy initiatives
  • using government procurement strategies to create market support for emerging green technology
  • enhancing the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act & Species at Risk Act
  • subjecting the oil sand sector, fracking, and shale gas development to comprehensive environmental assessments

Protecting Our Environment, Innovating Our Economy

“I admire Peggy Nash’s long-time fight for social justice for working people, Canadian economic and energy sovereignty, and environmental sustainability. Peggy is plucky, well informed and exactly the kind of leader the NDP and Canada need today.”
