Letter to the Polish community in wake of flight tragedy

Dear Mr. Lizon:

I was very shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible tragedy that has befallen Poland as a result of the terrible plane crash on April 10th of this year. It is an unspeakable tragedy that the world has lost the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynsk, along with the First Lady Maria Kaczyńska, as well as many senior state officials, members of the Polish delegation and the plane crew.

The loss of these key political, social and military leaders is a devastating event. Occurring as it did on the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre compounds the tragedy. The scar of the Katyn Massacre remains front and centre in our minds as it reminds us of the brutal legacy of oppression faced by the Polish people. Even today in a modern and democratic Poland, we can never forget the past struggles and hardships.

During this week of mourning my thoughts and prayers are with you and all the Polish people and those of Polish origin. NDP Leader Jack Layton will attend the service next week in Poland. We all share the grief of the Polish community at this time.

My sincerest condolences to you and the entire Polish community in Canada which you so ably represent,

Peggy Nash
President, New Democratic Party of Canada
